Imagine writing 37 novels with the same core cast of characters! Robert B. Parker’s been doing that with his Spenser private-eye series since 1973. Regrettably, Robert B, Parker passed away in January 2010. The urbane PI, Spenser, his psychiatrist lover, Susan Silverman, fellow boxer, Hawk, and various Boston police detectives and villains populate this contemporary hard-boiled series. As with any series, there are stronger and weaker titles, and I am pleased to say that the newest entry, The Professional is a great one. Spenser’s characteristic wit is fully present in this tale of marital infidelity wherein four wealthy women hire Spenser to take care of a common philanderer. With what the Pittsburg Gazette calls Parker’s ‘eloquently spare prose’, this reader enjoys this long-standing series. Parker also writes the Sunny Randall and Jesse Stone series. Mystery fans may not also be aware that Parker writes westerns too. Venture out and try his classic, Gunman’s Rhapsody, Parker’s take on Wyatt Earp. Enjoy!
