Chasing the Dead by Joe Schreiber is a short book to begin with (196 pages) but if you want an extremely fast read and do not mind some blood and gore, this is the book for you. I started it intending to read just the first 20 pages or so before I went to sleep for the night and couldn’t put it down-and I had been up all night the night before! The whole story takes place in one night and involves a woman trying to get back her kidnapped baby from a lunatic (who also turns out to be undead). In order to get back her daughter, Sue has to drive a specific route through towns that had historically experienced mass abductions and killings of children and do it by a specific time. One of the towns that is on her route is actually her hometown which brings back unwanted memories of a bad thing that her and her best friend had to do when they were children. Her baby’s kidnapper seems to know everything about her, has even been in her house and tapped her phones prior to the kidnapping. Obstacles, including a snowstorm, abound and Sue is punished a couple times by the kidnapper for what he considers her insubordination. Sue knows, however, that the ultimate punishment would be not making it to her destination in time to save her baby. Will she make it? Read and find out in “Chasing the Dead”.
