The Sherlockian by Graham Moore is a delightful and satisfying addition to the oevre of Sherlock Holmes tales written by other authors than Conan Doyle. The book tells two stories. The first story is contemporary and focuses on a possible murder among the Baker Street Irregulars, the pre-eminent Sherlock Holmes society. In this tale we see new Irregular, Harold White accompanied by a purported female reporter, attempt to solve a murder and recoup the missing diaries of Holmes’ author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The alternating story is set in December 1893. It’s a tale of intrigue featuring Doyle, Bram Stoker, and the suffragette movement. Moore intersperses the tales expertly. I was amazed to read that The Sherlockian is Moore’s first book. Moore is a graduate of Columbia University in religious history.
