At the library I came across a coffee table type book called Chicks with Guns by Lindsay McCrum and wondered if it would work as a present for my dad, who appreciates both guns and women. After flipping through it, I actually sat down and read it and it was very interesting. First of all, it’s not political-it never mentions the NRA or the 2nd amendment. It has pictures of women and girls with their favorite guns (mostly hunting guns) and each picture has an article explaining the person’s exposure to guns and why they like certain ones. I am not a gun connoisseur myself but I enjoyed reading about the different guns and the memories associated with them. Most of the women were taught to hunt when they were children and have cherished memories of their fathers teaching them about guns. They generally live in either the South or the West and many seem quite wealthy. One woman has memories of her family’s friend Bing Crosby (who loved to hunt) being invited to their family’s camp to hunt but no women were allowed. Bing, who liked to go hunting with his wife, refused to come without her. Later this woman’s stepfather changed their family’s traditions and women started hunting with the men. I think my dad will really enjoy this book-the pictures are beautiful!
