Before the End, After the Beginning by Dagoberto Gilb

Too busy to read?  You can answer with a resounding “No”, by selecting Short Stories as your subject search in Tipcat (click here) .  One gem among the over 1000 items from which to choose, is Dagoberto Gilb’s collection, Before the End, After the Beginning. Gilb, whose previous books are The Flowers, Gritos, Woodcuts of Women, The Last Known Residence of Mickey Acula, won the PEN/Hemingway Award for The Magic of Blood.  There are 10 stories in this small (194 pages) volume, many of which were written as Gilb recovered from a stroke.  Indeed, the first story, Please,Thank you describes the experiences of a stroke patient in hospital.  The others return to Gilb’s common themes of life across the southwest.  Cross cultural conflict provides the tension in many of these small, exquisite tales.  Highly recommended.
