Small exhibits, displays in wall cases and community bulletin board included. If wall space is limited, a kiosk could be used, but not obstruct view into library.

An active, noisy traffic area which should be inviting, airy and non-congestive. Consider non-resilient flooring for acoustical advantages. Area could include artwork, banners, neon, special lighting, ceiling treatment or other means to make it visually stimulating.

A janitorial closet needs to be included in the lobby area.

Staff:

Check out of materials could be accommodated by extending the circulation counter into this area. Three check out stations should be planned.

Other requirements are outlined in the Circulation section of the program.

Furniture & Equipment:

System Needs:

Adjacencies:

Adjacent to/included with circulation department. Display area for new books and other materials will be just inside entrance.

CIRCULATION AREA

Square Feet: 750

Function/Use/Environment:

Return of borrowed materials as people enter and check out of materials as they exit. This is the materials security checkpoint before exiting into the air lock. This is one of the noisiest areas in the library, with conversation (occasionally adversarial), movement of materials, and machines contributing simultaneously to the decibel level.

The circulation desk should be unobtrusive, as it is not the main function of the library, even though almost everyone must deal with it. The user's eye should not be drawn to the circulation desk, but to the library which lies beyond.

In addition to staff-assisted check out, there will be self-check out stations.

Staff:

1      Circulation Supervisor
2      Circulation Aides
5      Work-Study Aides
5      Pages/Work-Study Pages

Furniture & Equipment:

System Needs:

Adjacencies:

Adjacent to/included in Lobby area. Self check out stations will be immediately before reaching check out desk. Beyond the circulation desk in the interior will be new books and other library materials display area. Circulation area will be immediately adjacent to Staff Work area. Optimally, exterior book return slots will empty into enclosed fireproof space within Circulation area.

WORK AND DELIVERY AREA

Square Feet: 1,000

Function/Use/Environment:

Diverse uses, including work area for all staff, temporary storage of library materials being delivered to/from Main library, minor processing and repair of library materials, library supply depot, and general library storage. Deliveries from other campus buildings, Main library, vendors, and general delivery vehicles should enter directly into this area.

This multi-purpose area should be designed in plan and acoustically to be conducive to work environment. Acoustically, but not visually, separated from the public areas.

Staff:

Furniture & Equipment:

System Needs:

Adjacencies:

Adjacent to Circulation area and exterior delivery area. Visually adjacent to main floor public area.

YOUTH SERVICES AREA

Square Feet: 5,000

Function/Use/Environment:

The Youth area is comprised of several smaller areas devoted to youth services: Public service desk, story hour/crafts room, periodicals, electronic resources, multi-media, and collections for juvenile reference, fairy tales, picture books, early readers, juvenile illustrated fiction, fiction books and fact books. The area is used by both children and adults, including parents, teachers, higher education students, and caregivers.

The area should be flexible and open, decorated in a colorful and inviting manner, and buffered from reference and study areas. Consider the use of neon or other artistic treatments. Furnishings should generally be child size and child friendly and shelving should not exceed 66".

Staff:

Public service station with two staff positions with flexibility to expand number of staff. Station must be large enough to accommodate up to four computers with associated printers and peripherals. Space should include files and storage for supplies and ready reference materials.

The area should be easily identified by and inviting to its user group. For supervision, the area should be visible to staff and other library users, yet convey a feeling of isolation. Flexibility for rearrangement over time is important for display, furnishings, and space allocation. It is expected that the atmosphere will be conversational, requiring attention to acoustics to minimize disruption to other users.

Specialized collections, such as automotive repair, careers, and finance may be housed in ranges of shelving separate from the general collections.

Periodical display, reading, and storage is included in this area.
