  • Indiana Civil War Page - Links to most Indiana regiments, includes diaries, letters, and stories.
     
  • Indiana Early Marriage Index - Index to Indiana marriages through 1850.  Searchable by either spouse's name.
     
  • Allen County Public Library - Renowned collection contains more than 220,000 printed volumes, and 251,000 items of microfilm and fiche for Indiana and the rest of the world.
     
  • INGenWeb - Indians's GenWeb pages.  Cemetary records, obituaries, marriage records and more.

  • RootsWeb - Trimed-down version of the Ancestry.com pay site, but a good place to start especially with more recent ancestors. Has the Social Security death index.

  • Family Search - Sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, this site a great place to search for ancestors, get research guidance, view maps, forms and guides.
     
  • Gencircles - Genealogical data on over 60 million individuals submitted by users.
     
  • Geneanet - Limited but useful info submitted by users.
     
  • Distant Cousin - Information submitted by users, has a nice Indiana section.
     
  • Cemetery Records Online - Burial records and tombstone inscriptions are available here for over 3.5 million cemetery records throughout the world.
     
  • Find-A-Grave - Grave listings around the world.

  • National Archives - American Indian tribe information, a great beginning "Genealogy Page".  Explanation of useful genealogical documents.
     
  • Ellis Island Records - American Family History Immigration Center is making records available of the more than 17 million immigrants who entered the United States through Ellis Island, N.Y. from 1892-1924.
     
  • BRB Publications -- Home of the Public Records Research System, this site offers free Internet access to public records.  It includes the United States and Canada.
     
  • USGenWeb - Links to state organizations, including state historical societies, and regional genealogical information sources. Helpful for out-of-state searching.
     
  • NARA Archival Information Locator - The National Archives and Records Administration on-line information system, this site is useful for searching military information.
     
  • U.S. Gazetteer- Need to find a town that doesn't show up on the map?

DIRECTORIES AND SEARCH ENGINES

WORLD

  • WorldGen Web - Similar to the USGen Web, this network of sites is not as widely developed as its USA counterpart. However, it is expanding and is still an important tool for doing research outside of the United States.
     
  • Family History in India - Can be used for tracing British, European and Anglo-Indian family history in India, Burma, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

SURNAME INDEXES

  • Yahoo Surname Indices - Find out if your surname has a home page (or two)!
     
  • Common Threads - Searchable Surname Database, as well as a surname message board.
     
  • Kindred Konnections - Search the free 16 million name Surname Index. Additional databases are fee-based.
     
  • Online Genealogical Database Index - A list of websites associated with a particular surname.
     
  • GEN FORUM - A collection of surname query sites (message boards) specific to a given surname. See if your family name has one!
