There are many ways parents can help their children before preschool and kindergarten and during the school year. The more experiences a child has, the better prepared he/she is for school and learning.

Social and Personal Care and Safety:

A child should:

Learn full name
Learn address (including city and state)
Learn phone number
Be able to manage his/her own clothing
Use the bathroom on his/her own (flushing and washing hands)
Express needs and wants
Tie, zip, snap, and button
Have experience with crayons, pencils, and scissors
Listen to the teacher and other children
Follow directions
Speak in complete sentences
Sit for work or story
Share and take turns At home:

Talk with your child
Listen to your child
Describe objects--Tell what they are and how they work Have your child help you:

Cook
Sort and fold laundry
Work in a garden Take your child:

To the park
To the zoo
To the library
On walks
To the store
Talk about what you see and do Academics:
READ, READ, READ:

Read to your child daily
Ask questions about what was read
Show movement left to right on the page
Provide books
Learn shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle)
Recognize colors (red, blue, green, yellow, etc)
Say the ABC's
Recognize the letters (capital and lower case)
Print name with one capital letter and the rest lower case letters
Count to 10
Recognize the numbers 0-10
Know the difference between letters and numbers School:
Before the school year begins:

Attend Kindergarten Round-up in the spring:

Your child must be 5 years old by August 1st
Bring child's birth certificate
Bring proof of shots
Bring proof of residency (a bill)
Bring information on any medications taken or any health concerns for your child. As school begins:

Register your child at his/her school in August
Bring your child to the before school meeting with the teacher
Tour the school
Pay the book rental fee
Forms are in each school office to apply for assistance Participate in School functions:

Attend Parent Night/Open House
Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences
Join the Parent-Teacher Group
Volunteer to help at school
Be a room parent
Go on field trips
Send in supplies for the classroom
Read notes from school
Sign and return forms promptly
Make sure your child knows how to get to and from school
Call the school if your child is ill or won't be in school
Send the required supplies
Each school will send its own list of supplies
Some supplies are included in the book rental
Get to know your child's teacher
Tell the teacher any information that would be helpful to know
Tell how your child will arrive at school and leave school
Help your child do any homework
Practice skills that are being taught in school
